Who is Ofc. David Moore?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Sunday’s shooting that left an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer critically wounded sparked many questions in the minds of Hoosiers; including “Who is David Moore?”

At 29-years-old, Moore had been on the force since 2004 when he was honored as Rookie of the Year. He works the dayshift in the north district.

“In every sense of the word David is a natural police officer. You don’t do it by popularity; you don’t do it by friendships. You do it by work ethic and work product. That’s how David got (rookie of the year), said Bill Owesby, President of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Moore made headlines in 2008 when he shot and killed a man who drew a gun on him on the city’s west side.

Officer Moore comes from a law enforcement driven family. His mother is Sergeant Joanne Moore. His father, retired IPD Lieutenant Spencer Moore, is well known for founding Crime Stoppers.

Spencer told reporters Sunday that he knew something was wrong when he got the phone call from a friend at IMPD. 

“I had just gotten back from church and I knew there was a problem by his stuttered talk but I had no imagination it was this. But he asked a question: 'Is David working today?' I knew immediately there was a serious problem. I said well, yeah and he said I think he has been hurt. I said what is hurt and he said I think he has been shot.” 

Joanne Moore was out of town on vacation Sunday morning, Public Safety Director Frank Straub brought her back to town on a direct flight.
