Winning lotto ticket leads to fight

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Seven Indianapolis hairstylists working at the same salon think they may have gotten clipped by an eighth stylist holding a winning lottery ticket – and there's millions of dollars on the line. 

The eight stylists from an east side Indianapolis hair salon pooled their money to buy tickets for the Hoosier Lottery's Feb. 17 drawing. 

The stylist who handled the money bought the winning ticket at an east side Speedway gas station – a ticket worth $9.5 million. 

But she claimed, the winning ticket was one she bought for herself, not for the group. 

If she had cashed it in right away she might have the money right now. 

Instead, she took the ticket to the salon to show her co-workers who were not happy.

"Disappointed," is the way the Indianapolis attorney the stylists hired, Scott Montross, put it. “We're unsure of exactly what's going on,” he told 24-Hour News 8.  

None of the women would comment and Montross didn't want to speak on camera. 

He did tell 24-Hour News 8, "We don't know what happened. We are concerned about what might have happened." He said he is just trying to find out the facts. Montross was able to get a judge to issue a temporary restraining order that keeps the Hoosier Lottery from paying the jackpot to anyone. 

The easiest way to make sure something like this doesn't happen to is to make a copy of all the tickets you buy. Once you've done that, post it publically and make sure everyone who is in the group gets a copy. 

However, now, $9.5 million is waiting for a winner to claim it.

It will be up to a court, or the parties involved, to reach a settlement so someone can collect.

The next step in this story will be Wednesday. 

Scott Montross will be in court asking a judge for an injunction to keep the lottery from paying out the jackpot, until more investigation can be finished.
