Winter weather slows drivers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The first snow event of the season is creating dangerous driving conditions.

Snow plows, salt and flashing lights; they're the sights of the season Hoosiers are finally getting a good look at.

"I really do look forward to the snow. I feel like if it's going to be cold it might as well snow," said a driver.

This winter weather is coming in fast and strong, leaving city and state road workers on alert.

"We'll be bringing in our regular night shift with some supplemental drivers to keep an eye on things throughout the night and to salt the roads as necessary," said Nathan Riggs from INDOT.

With the first snow event of the season, INDOT typically sees a spike in crashes caused by drivers who are not yet reconditioned to dangers of winter weather.

It's not only the slick roads you need to watch out for, the wind is packing a punch with gusts in the 40 mph range and if you're in a high profile vehicle you have to be really careful.

"The wind is insane. It's blowing my car all over the road," said another driver.

"It is definitely blowing good. As a guy who races sailboats I would definitely like to have a sail on this thing tonight," said a man filling up his car.

Whipping winds, lowered visibility, and slick roads; it's enough to keep some drivers parked. With Christmas just around the corner, for others, certain things just can't wait.

"I love the snow so I'm just preparing for it. I just have to remember to take my time but I got to get my shopping done so I'm going to be out here!" said another driver.

INDOT urges drivers to slow down, leave extra space in between cars and leave extra time to get to your destination.
