WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Several students at a central Indiana elementary school got to talk with a home-state astronaut as he orbited the Earth in the International Space Station.
A few hundred children gathered in the gymnasium of West Lafayette's Cumberland Elementary School on Tuesday as a radio hook-up put them in touch with the space station.
The Journal & Courier reports students asked questions such as whether the astronauts have animals in space and what's inside the space station. Answering was astronaut Kevin Ford, who grew up in Montpelier and arrived at the space station last week.
Third-grade teacher David Brantley tells WLFI-TV it took a couple years to arrange the conversation with NASA and that he hopes it will inspire the children about science.
