ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WISH/The Reporter) - A woman was taken to Clarian North Hospital Monday morning after her black Nissan plunged into a pond on Weston Point Drive and U.S. 421 on the northwest side.
The Hamilton County Fire Department said only the back end of the Nissan was sticking out of the water when Zionsville resident Fred Robbins pulled Lorraine M. Holland out of it. A witness said Robbins was able to grab a rock from the shore and use it to shatter a window on the vehicle and pull Holland out.
Toni Sheehy of Carmel initially witnessed the car drive into the pond and flagged down Robbins.
The fire department said Robbins was a lifeguard for five years and that Robbins believes the experience served him well during the rescue. The department added that Robbins definitely put his own safety aside by going into the water, especially as cold as it was.
Police do not know what caused Holland’s vehicle to drive into the pond. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an accident investigation.
