TIPTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - An Atlanta man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Tipton County early Friday morning.

The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. on Tipton County Road 400 East, near Tipton County Road 550 South.

Police say 22-year-old Joseph Richards was driving his 1990 Dodge Dakota northbound on CR 400 East when the car began to travel off the side of the road. The vehicle traveled down an embankment and came to a rest, on its top, in a ditch.

Richards was able to escape the car and walk along the road. About half a mile from the crash scene, he collapsed in the roadway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police believe he died before he was struck by the oncoming vehicle. It is not yet known if he died from injuries sustained in the original crash or due to cold temperatures.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in this accident.
