Ball State sees 2012 enrollment dip

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Ball State University says its enrollment is down this year due largely to more competition for top students and a more selective admissions process.

The Star Press reports the number of students enrolled on campus has fallen by about 400 after several years of growth.

Vice President Tom Taylor says Ball State would like to have more freshmen enrolled but that the lower number reflects competition for the best students. He notes that students with stronger grades and SAT scores can get accepted at more schools.

Taylor says this year's numbers also were affected by larger classes that have passed through.

Indiana University and Purdue University also saw declines on their main campuses this year.
