MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Ball State University in Muncie is partnering with eight other U.S. universities in helping to strengthen higher education in the southeast Asian nation of Myanmar.

The New York-based Institute for International Education announced Tuesday the nine schools will begin strategic planning for developing partnerships with universities in the nation formerly known as Burma and rebuilding its higher education capacity.

The announcement comes on the heels President Barack Obama's trip to Myanmar and his stated commitment to advance education there.

Some of the other participating U.S. schools are the universities of Massachusetts and Washington, Arizona State and Northern Illinois.

Indiana has large populations of Burmese refuges in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.
