Caterpillar laying off 167 workers

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Caterpillar's Lafayette Engine Center announced it's cutting 167 jobs beginning in September.

The cuts come from the company's flexible workforce of agency workers and part-time and temporary workers. Caterpillar says the flexible workforce fluctuates due to demand needs. It uses a flexible workforce to be able to react quickly to business decisions.

In Caterpillar's most recent quarterly report, Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman was cautious about 2012 saying, "While we're expecting a record year in 2012, we understand the world is facing economic challenges, and if it becomes necessary, we are prepared to act quickly as we did in late 2008 and 2009."

Caterpillar said it remains very positive about long-term global growth, but businesses and plants within the company must take short-term actions to keep production in line with demand.
