Community comes to rescue of hot animal shelter

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A rescue group whose animals were wilting under this month's heat is breathing a sigh of relief after receiving donations of air conditioners.

Melissa Blair of the Animal Rescue Fund in Muncie says the group put out a plea for cooling equipment on its Facebook page after its old air conditioner began struggling to keep up with the heat.

Blair tells The Star Press that the 121 animals housed by the group were lethargic. A pig was spending its time in a wading pool.

She says the group has been inundated with help since its plea. A property management company donated a new central air conditioning system to help the animals. The shelter also has fans, window air conditioners and pools filled with cool water.
