MARION, Ind. (AP) - A Central Indiana county clerk is going to stop doing courthouse weddings, saying staffing cuts and an office relocation make the ceremonies impractical.
Grant County Clerk Mark Florence says that while an average of 250 weddings a year have taken place at the courthouse in Marion, his office will end the practice Jan. 1.
Florence tells the Chronicle-Tribune that state law allows the clerk's office to perform weddings, but doesn't require it to do so.
The clerk's office will still issue marriage licenses to couples in accordance with state law.
Florence says the county judges know about his decision, but doesn't know whether they do more courthouse weddings.
