CSX delays plan to speed up trains

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana mayor says a railroad has agreed to a one-month delay on its plans to double the speed of freight trains going through the city to 60 mph.
Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler met Tuesday with officials from CSX Transportation about his safety concerns with the faster speeds. The railroad had announced plans a couple weeks ago to start the faster speeds on Jan. 1, but Tyler tells The Star Press that any changes are on hold until Feb. 1.
Tyler says city officials will use that time to explain worries about the potential for more accidents or derailments.
Dozens of trains a day pass through the 70,000-person city, and CSX officials say the faster trains would reduce crossing delays and improve the efficiency of rail operations.
