CSX drops increased train speed plans

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A railroad has scrapped its plans to increase train speeds through Muncie after city officials raised concerns about safety.
CSX Corp. announced in December that it would raise train speeds through the city from 30 mph to 60 mph. Railroad officials said the move would increase productivity for CSX and would cut wait times for motorists at blocked crossings.
City leaders were caught off guard by the announcement and voiced concern that the higher speeds could cause more car-train collisions and more serious injuries or fatalities.
The Star Press reports that CSX has decided to keep the 30 mph speed through Muncie. Trains in rural areas will continue to run at about 60 mph.
CSX runs 20 freight trains through the city each day.
