Dogs dumped in trash at Mount Comfort Elementary School

GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - Cafeteria workers made a surprising discovery inside a trash bin outside a central Indiana elementary school: two dogs, apparently abandoned.

April McMullen and Debbie Snow are still in shock after finding the two poodle-mix dogs inside a box in the trash bin outside Mount Comfort Elementary School in Hancock County.

“I could not believe somebody would throw puppies away in the Dumpster,” McMullen said.

And the dogs weren’t in good shape, either.

“When we went over there to look at them, they were very skinny. You could feel their bones,” Snow said.

The dogs, which are now going by the names Mama and Milo, were found early in the morning on April 2. School official April Adkins said the pair apparently was abandoned sometime over the weekend or early that Monday morning.

“It’s a good thing they were found on Monday,” she said. “On Tuesday morning, very early, the recycle truck comes and flips the bin upside down and empties everything into the truck, and they would have never survived that.”

Administrators called the Humane Society and even put an ad in the local paper, looking for the dogs' owners. It’s still unknown who left the dogs. But both were adopted by a local family and are happy and in good health.
