BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Anita Wernsing was within minutes of her Fayette home. But the 78-year-old never made it.
A driver traveling northbound on State Road 267 Sunday night hit her and kept going.
Now, her family is pleading for someone to come forward.
“Clearly it was an accident but to leave someone on the road that you hit is not OK to do,” her granddaughter Mistie Linn said. “She was very kind. She was what anybody would want in a grandma.”
The Boone County Sheriff's Office is asking for help for any information on a hit-and-run which took the life of an elderly female walking home from church.
Wernsing’s family says she was walking from Mt. Tabor Primitive Church, to her home, directly across the street, in the 7000 block of South State Road 267. A driver who noticed her lying in the road after making a wrong turn called 9-1-1.
He tried to help but it was to late. Wernsing died at the scene.
Investigators say they recovered broken parts from the vehicle that hit Wernsing. But they need more.
Their hope is that someone who saw something will call. Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell said three vehicles went through the scene. But they aren’t sure which of the three hit Wernsing.
“It's hard for me to believe the person who struck her did not know they struck a human being. ” Campbell said. “If this was your family members you would want to know who committed this act so we could follow up and complete our investigation. ”
If you know any information about the crash or anyone involved, please contact the Boone County Sheriff's Office at 765-482-1412 or at tips@co.boone.in.us
