LOGANSPORT, Ind. (Pharos-Tribune) - Logansport firefighters pulled a small child from a burning home this morning.

The fire department responded to a call for a structure fire on 20th Street just after 9 a.m. with reports that there was a child trapped inside.

Within minutes of their arrival, assistant fire chief Dave Huff said, his crew was conducting a search for the child they estimated to be around 2 years old. Huff said visibility in the home was low with a large amount of thick, black smoke coming from the second story.

Firefighter Rick Bair found the boy in an upstairs bedroom under a pile of clothes. He was the only person still inside the home.

His mother was waiting for him outside the house, Huff said.

Clayton Freels of the Logansport Fire Department rode to Logansport Memorial Hospital with the child and said by the time they arrived at the hospital the boy was coughing and able to grab Freels's hand.

The child is being flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
