MOROCCO, Ind. (WLFI) - Firefighters spent more than 10 hours battling a large fire at Morocco Finer Foods grocery store, located at 505 South Polk Street in Morocco, Saturday evening.

Upon arrival, firefighters said the building was emitting heavy smoke and was found to be well involved in fire.

Winds carried the heavy smoke into a nearby residential area, forcing neighbors out of their homes after firefighters mandated an evacuation.

After speaking with Morocco Assistant Fire Chief Matt Carlson, News 18 learned the grocery store closed at 8 p.m. Saturday, and nobody was inside during the fire.

Carlson said the grocery store is a total loss.

The Morocco Fire Department requested aid from several area fire departments including Brook Fire Department, Lake Township Fire Department, Kentland Fire Department, Rensselaer Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance Service, and Papineau Fire Department, which is located in Illinois.

The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
