GASTON, Ind. (AP) - State officials are planning to repair a stretch of a Central Indiana highway that is slowly sinking into a bog.
State Department of Transportation officials say that a 400-foot section Indiana 28 near the Delaware County town of Gaston is "basically sinking away." The Star Press of Muncie reports ( http://tspne.ws/IyAF75 ) that it is estimated to cost nearly $550,000 to excavate a deposit of dead plant material known as peat underneath the road and rebuild it.
Construction on the highway near Wes-Del High School is tentatively scheduled for 2014, after completion of engineering and right of way acquisition. State officials estimate the peat deposit could be 30 feet deep.
