MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Two barns that were once part of a thriving eastern Indiana dairy farm are being dismantled for a move to a sustainable-farming project.
Deconstruction specialist Brook Linton and his crew are in the midst of a two-week effort to disassemble the barns at the former Riggin's Dairy north of Muncie that closed in the 1990s. Both oak, pine and redwood barns have double-sloped gambrel roofs and gables.
The Star Press reports that the best parts of the aging barns will be trucked to Farmland about 10 miles east of Muncie and reassembled into a single barn for a project called "Greener Acres Farm" that will grow specialty crops.
The Indianapolis-based Efroymson Family Fund is paying for the deconstruction, but a nonprofit will raise money to erect the new barn.
