Ind. county cleaning up illegally dumped tires

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana county is footing the bill for cleaning up hundreds of old tires illegally dumped on county-owned land in the city of Muncie.
Delaware County Commissioner Larry Bledsoe says county crews are removing the tires from the dump site on Muncie's south side. He tells the Star Press the property fell into the county's hands in 2002, apparently because of delinquent property taxes.
Bledsoe estimated that there are as many as 1,000 tires on the site. He says used tires dumped along roads and in vacant lots are a constant headache for local government.
City Building Commissioner Craig Nichols says an inspection this week found an estimated 500 tires. County officials have reported the dump site to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
