KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) - They're not doctors. They're not hair stylists. They're strippers, and some on the Kokomo City Council want these ladies to get a professional license.

Councilwoman Cindy Sanders introduced the proposal that has some scratching their heads, but for this long time nurse, licensing exotic dancers is all about stopping human trafficking.

“We know that human trafficking occurs a lot in the sexual oriented businesses and therefore it protects performers,” said Sanders.

Sanders says by making dancers register with the city it would force them to prove legal residence. It would also give police greater power to enforce what goes on inside clubs.

Before any action can be taken the Kokomo City Council must make sure licensing does not violate any state or federal laws.

If passed, Kokomo would be the first city in Indiana to require adult entertainers to be licensed.

The cost of a license has yet to be discussed however 24-Hour News 8 is being told it will probably be a few hundred dollars.
