TIPTON, Ind. (WISH) - A Tipton County man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, with credit for time already served, for the death of a 4-year-old boy in Nov. 2010.

Tipton Circuit Court sentenced James W. Rice on Wednesday.

Rice was arrested in 2010 on a warrant for battery causing death, a Class A felony, and reckless homicide, a Class C felony, Indiana State Police say.

ISP and Tipton County Sheriff’s Department jointly investigated the incident. Rice was arrested at his mother’s home in Elwood.

Police say Rice was the boyfriend of 4-year-old Dylan Cast’s mother. Dylan was in Rice’s care on Nov. 26, 2010 when he was taken by ambulance to the Tipton Hospital emergency room with severe internal injuries.

He died from those injuries and a severed spine.

Dylan's mother was at work the morning of Nov. 26, and police say Rice had "no plausible explanation for the boys' injuries."
