BROOKSTON, Ind. (WLFI) - What started as a robbery in Lafayette, ends with a car crashing into a tree in Brookston.
Lafayette police said they received a call about a robbery on the north side of Lafayette, just before 5:00 Saturday evening.
Upon further investigation, police learned that a firearm was taken during the robbery. The occupant of the home, who was away at the time of the theft, named a person he suspected in the burglary.
About a half an hour later, LPD received a 911 call that the suspect named in the burglary was pointing a firearm from a vehicle at a person in another vehicle.
This call came from the area of Sagamore Parkway and South St.
LPD units responded, and observed the vehicle described as containing the suspect, leaving the area.
An LPD officer followed the vehicle, awaiting other police units to perform a high-risk stop on the suspect vehicle.
The suspect vehicle entered I-65 Northbound, and the LPD unit followed.
When the suspect vehicle exited the interstate at SR 43, a traffic stop was attempted, but the suspect vehicle fled Northbound on SR 43.
LPD units stopped their attempts to catch the vehicle, just south of Brookston. It was later discovered that a vehicle, matching the suspect vehicle description, had crashed into a tree in a yard at 811 Prairie Street in Brookston.
According to police, a witness reported seeing a passenger run from the vehicle.
Police said as of 10:00 Saturday night, attempts to locate that passenger have been unsuccessful.
According to police, a female passenger was transported to Lafayette. A male occupant was transported to Indianapolis by Lifeline with unknown injuries.
No other people were injured in the crash, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A firearm matching the description of the one stolen in Lafayette has been recovered from the crashed vehicle.
LPD is assisting the White County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation of the crash.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the identities of those involved are not being released at this time.
