KOKOMO, Ind. (Kokomo Tribune) - A Marine was awarded the Purple Heart at Grissom Air Reserve Base on Friday while his wife and fellow Marines looked on.
Captain E. Markus Trouerbach, 44, was wounded in Afghanistan in 2008 and originally refused this commendation. Mortar rounds were fired in his direction, leaving him with a brain injury and other problems, 24-Hour News 8's news partner The Kokomo Tribune reports.
When Trouerbach arrived at Grissom to begin his current deployment, he says the record of his proposed commendation was found in his medical records.
The Purple Heart was approved in August and Trouerbach was awarded on Friday.
Trouerbach presented a Purple Heart to the family of Marine Sergeant Bradley Atwell , who was killed in Afghanistan in Sept.
Trouerbach is still in service four years after being wounded.
