MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Two people were killed in a crash Wednesday morning in Miami County

Indiana State Police say officers were called to a two-car crash on U.S. 31 at State Road 218 shortly before 10 a.m.

Preliminary information reveals an 87-year-old man was driving his van southbound on U.S. 31, approaching State Road 218.

When he attempted to turn eastbound on SR 218 he failed to yield at a median crossover and traveled into the northbound lanes of U.S. 31.

His vehicle was struck by a Chevrolet Suburban.

One passenger of the van, 79-year-old Earl Ooten was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital and later died from his injuries. A second passenger, 79-year-old Margie Highfill, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation, but alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have played a role in the accident.
