TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - A fire in Tippecanoe County is under control after burning for hour overnight. Firefighters are still battling hot spots Sunday morning.
The Saturday night fire called for the response of fire crews from two counties.
Dispatchers in Tippecanoe County say a fire started at the Industrial Pallet Corporation, located at 11349 U.S. 52 in Clarks Hill, shortly after 8 p.m. Officials say the blaze completely destroyed the facility.
Officials warned locals about the power of the fire, in case it began to spread. "I looked over and saw it, and it was already up through the top of the building," said David Banpelt, whose home is near Industrial Pallet Corp. "There have been fires here before, but mostly in the piles of wood in the back where the sawdust is back there. It's the first time it's ever caught the building on fire."
Locals could see the fire burning from miles away.
Our crew on scene says the fire is under control, firefighters are working to battle a few hot spots at the building.
About 30 fire departments and 100 firefighters responded to this fire. They say the fire broke out in the main building, but six semi trailers were also destroyed. It took about one million gallons of water to contain the blaze. Firefighters say the main battle was getting water to crews, as there are no fire hydrants on scene.
Police say no injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Officers in Tippecanoe County say U.S. 52 South, northbound lanes, are closed at State Road 28 East due to the fire.
