MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Organizers of a central Indiana county fair are planning events for a new fairgrounds grandstand that is replacing an old seating area that inspectors determined had many safety problems.
Work has been under way building the new steel supports for the grandstand at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Muncie. County officials in March approved the project costing about $500,000 to demolish the old grandstand built in 1948 and build the new seating.
Fair officials tell The Star Press ( http://tspne.ws/KSNdUO ) that plans for the July 9-21 fair include a high school band contest, two demolition derbies, a truck pull, hog wrestling and a rodeo at the grandstand.
Officials closed the old grandstand last fall after an inspection prompted by last summer's deadly stage rigging collapse at the Indiana State Fair.
