ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - "It's OK. I'm not mad. I gave the order. And it is what it is. And here we are."

Police officer Marty Dulworth was composed in the Milano Inn Restaurant. He’s had a few months to think about the loss of his four-legged partner.

"I've been in the Marine Corps,” Dulworth said. “I've been to Iraq twice. I've never had to make a tougher decision in my life."

In Pendleton in July, Kilo was wounded by gunfire with a suspect.

Dulworth was wounded too, and a protective Kilo became aggressive toward officers trying to help him. Dulworth gave the order to kill Kilo.

"It was just terrible," Dulworth said. "But it had to be done."

People who love animals and admire the police knew this had to be done to help Anderson replace Kilo.

This is the first time Dulworth has discussed it in public. Judging by the x-rays, it'll be awhile before he can go back to work.

Doctors say a year.

"Seven months," Dulworth said. "I'll be back in seven months. I cant always be right."

Dulworth appreciates the support he sees from everyone. He's eager to show them he can get back to work.

"I'll come back as soon as I can. I'll get me a new dog and we'll hit the streets, running," he said.

Anderson Police lost another dog this summer. Magnum was shot during the pursuit of a bank robber.

Magnum's handler already has another dog. They're just bonding right now. They'll start training together next month.
