ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith is facing a $1.5 million budget deficit.
Smith is proposing eliminating seven police officer positions and 21 firefighter jobs from the city budget to close the gap.
"I’m not a fiscal expert," said FOP member William Ray. "I think constituents want to be safe and we are there to protect them."
Residents, police, and firefighters stood on Eight Main Street and held signs protesting the Mayor's proposed budget.
The crowd stood outside waiting for the city council meeting to start to voice their concerns.
No decision will be made at the meeting on the proposed budget.
Mayor Smith is currently in China according to his office, where he is trying to attract business to invest in Anderson.
The Mayor’s decision is also hurting children. Mariah Grant posted a video pushing for others to help her dad, Officer Jamie Grant and other public safety workers to keep their jobs.
"He cried. It was emotional. It touched him and inspired him," said Kristian Grant.
