BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - One person was killed and two others were injured when six vehicles collided Monday morning on Interstate 65 in Boone County.

The crash caused northbound lanes to be closed for more than three hours near State Road 267.

Whitestown Police Chief Dannis Anderson said the woman who died was northbound on I-65 when she approached traffic and changed lanes to try to avoid it.

“This was coming near the end of the morning traffic pattern going into the Amazon.com facility,” Anderson said. “We believe the traffic was backed up.  What I don't know is if the traffic was in a stopped position or just a slowed position.”

The woman hit the guard rail, bouncing back into oncoming traffic, where she was struck by two northbound vehicles. She died on the scene.

Two other people were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Police did not immediately release the name of the woman who died.
