WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Teams from Indiana colleges and high schools will compete to see whose machine can make the biggest job out of hammering a nail.

The state Rube Goldberg Machine Contest will be held Feb. 23 at Purdue University. The event is free and open to the public.

The competition pits teams of students and their machines against each other to see who can complete a simple task in the most complicated manner. Judges will also consider the creativity and ingenuity of the machines, which must take at least 20 steps to complete the assigned task.

The national competition will be March 16 at Waukesha County Technical College in Wisconsin.

The competition is named for the late cartoonist known for his drawings of whimsical, complicated devices to perform simple tasks.
