WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - More than 200 Indiana middle and high school students are preparing to participate in Purdue University's Science Olympiad regional competition.

The event is scheduled for Saturday on Purdue's campus and features 23 science- and technology-related competitions.

The event is free and open to the public.

Science Olympiad regional competition director Mindy Hart says the events are designed to stress science concepts, problem-solving skills and applications of technology.

Purdue's College of Science and the Science Olympiad Club are sponsoring the competition. Each team is made up of 15 students who are coached by teachers and parents and sometimes assisted by local scientists and engineers.

College of Science K-12 outreach director Bill Walker says popular events include Bottle Rockets and Robot Ramble.
