'Black box' may explain fatal crash

DALEVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Police officials in Delaware County say that three people were killed in an accident near Muncie Sunday afternoon, and there's a key piece of evidence that might be inside the vehicle.

Police say a single-car accident happened on Ind. 67 and County Road 600 West shortly after 4 p.m. This is just south of Muncie and three miles east of Daleville.

There were six people in the car – two adults and four juveniles. The driver, Lisa H. Case, 46, Kent Kalley, 46, and Andrew Lackey, 12, were killed in the crash.

"He loved football, wrestling and martial arts in the off season" said Linda Liming, mother of Andrew Lackey.  "He wanted to go to Purdue and play football for Purdue".

Liming says before her son got in the car he called her to ask if he could go with his friend and her dad to a nearby bank.  Liming said OK but told her son to be home in time to go to church.

Three other children, all 13 years old, were injured in the crash. As of 7:30 p.m. Monday, Savanna Kalley, 13 was in critical condition but stable at IU Health Methodist Hospital. Trace Joiner, 13; and Jessica DeLong, 13 were in good condition at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

The accident is currently under investigation but preliminary investigation suggests the SUV was traveling between 70 and 90 mph. The posted speed limit was 55 mph. Investigators believe the driver drove the car off the right side of the road and over-corrected.

On Monday afternoon investigators removed the vehicles airbag control module, or black box.  The box could provide vital information about the vehicles speed and braking system.

"That will give us a lot better idea what the actual speeds were" said Lt. Arlan Johnson, Delaware County Sheriff's Department.

Johnson expects to have the updated information on Tuesday.

One thing the black box won't tell him that investigators and family members want to know is why the car was traveling along the road where it crashed.

Johnson is hopeful the crash survivors will be able to provide those details.
