PENDLETON, Ind.(WISH) - An innocent bystander and a K-9 are dead following an overnight incident in which a man shot at police officers before turning the gun on himself.

Police searched for the suspect for hours, before finding him dead Friday morning of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. During his shooting spree, officers say he also injured two officers.

Officers say the incident began around 11 p.m. Thursday at Water and East streets in Pendleton when. Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer said the suspect, Kenneth James Bailey Jr., went to the home of his estranged wife. It’s unclear what he was doing there, but Farrer said officers believe he went to the house with plans to either hurt others or force others to hurt him. Bailey’s estranged wife is OK.

Neal Shull Jr., 48, -- the man described as an innocent victim -- was shot before police responded to a domestic disturbance at the home. Shull's wife, Noelle Shull said the couple was moving into a house near where the shooting happened. Her husband had been making repairs to their old house and said he would work until 11 p.m. and come back to the new house. Neal Shull owns N.S. Painting and had worked around Pendleton for about 30 years. He was also a father.

Officers believe Bailey was firing off warning shots to scare his wife, and Shull got caught in the crossfire. When officers arrived, the gunfire continued.

One officer from Anderson sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital. He has been identified as Marty Dulworth. A second officer, who is from Pendleton, sustained a very minor cut from a flying bullet.

A K-9 named Kilo was killed when he was shot. He had been with the department since 2010 and Farrer said he did what he was trained to do — save Anderson Officer Dulworth’s life.

The town of Pendleton was shut down while investigators searched for Bailey, who was armed with an SKS semi-automatic rifle, modified to be fully automatic. The town was reopened to traffic after officers found Bailey dead.

SWAT teams from the Indiana State Police, the Madison County Sheriff's Office, the Anderson Police Department and the Delaware County Sheriff's Office all responded Thursday night and overnight.
