Wind turbines stir up trouble

SHARPSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Tipton County officials are set to vote on tax abatements for the expansion of a wind farm into their area, and they’re bracing for an argument, 24-Hour News 8 news partner the Kokomo Tribune reports .

In expectation of heavy turnout at the meeting when the vote is scheduled, county officials moved the meeting to Tri Central High School. It is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday.

German wind energy giant juwi Group is looking to expand its turbines across U.S. 31, to the edge of Sharpsville.

At a meeting earlier this month, dozens of people turned out to speak out against the project. But the farmers who are leasing the land for the turbines say they won’t be the only ones who benefit from the project.

"The advantages outweigh any disadvantages," Salsbery told the newspaper. "The advantage is resources for the community, which can't be replaced ... . Once it's done, everybody is going to be happier."
