INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A boxing champion made a special appearance Saturday in Indianapolis.
Lamon Brewster, is a National American Boxing Association champion. He came to town to share his story with those who suffer from Parkinson's disease.
In a boxing ring on the city's east side Saturday you could find a heavyweight title holder and an instructor.
Lamon Brewster was getting a workout with instructor and trainer Kristi Follmar. Brewster grew up on the city's west side. He graduated from George Washington High School and learned how to box at the Christamore House. He is a National American Boxing Association Champion.
"I used to watch Marvin Johnson and Frankie Minton running around Riverside when I was a kid. They'd be running in the winter time with their gloves on thinking wow, man those dudes are crazy," Brewster said.
Brewster is providing some inspiration to those outside the ring. Many in the crowd Saturday were local residents living with Parkinson's disease.
Instructors run two classes on Saturdays, teaching Parkinson's patients boxing skills.
"I was at a point where I could not write my name and I was using voice activated software to type on my computer. Today I can sign my name, I can type. I can run a police department and fire department," Indianapolis Public Safety Director Scott Newman said.
Brewster is training for a fight. He says the class gives him a mental boost, "That's just more inspiration to me which goes back to what I said. You can do anything you set your mind to."
Brewster's dream has always been to box at home in Indianapolis. That dream will come true at Conseco Fieldhouse next weekend. Members of the class will be in the crowd.
Lamon Brewster's fight for the NABA Heavyweight title is scheduled for 7pm, November 29th at Conseco Fieldhouse.
He said he has a dream to one day return to Indianapolis and open a boxing gym for youth.
