EMINENCE, Ind. (WISH) - Indiana Conservation officers are trying to figure out who shot and killed a bald eagle found in Morgan County.

A resident found the eagle on private property near Eminence in rural Morgan County on Feb. 1.

"It is a senseless shooting of our national bird and a federally threatened species," said Conservation Officer Jon Fennig in a news release.

Bald eagles are protected by federal law and a violation can carry a fine of up to $250,000 and up to two years of imprisonment.

Anyone with information about the eagle’s death is asked to contact the Indiana Department of Natural Resources by calling 800-TIP-IDNR or visiting www.1800tipidnr.org. People who give information that leads to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
