Bloomington preps for parking meter vote

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — After a nearly six-week delay, the Bloomington City Council is preparing to vote on an unpopular proposal to install parking meters in the southern Indiana college town.

The Herald-Times reports council members and Mayor Mark Kruzan are resigned to the reality that few residents will publicly support the meter proposal.

The city council is scheduled to vote next Wednesday on Kruzan's proposal to install 1,200 parking meters along streets in downtown Bloomington at a rate of $1 an hour. The vote had been scheduled for Feb. 6, but it was delayed for six weeks due to opposition from local business owners who are worried about the meters' impact on their businesses.

Council's president Darryl Neher says he's been "getting phone calls every day" about the contentious parking issue.
