Bloomington to install parking meters

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan says his city can now make plans to install parking meters.

The City Council approved such a proposal after a long meeting Wednesday night.

The concept has been debated for several months. And, at Wednesday nights meeting, several Bloomington residents asked that the vote be delayed even longer.

Mayor Kruzan told the council the city’s growth created an “incredible increase in parking demand” with only a limited number of spaces downtown.”

With more development on the horizon, he encouraged approval of the meter plan.

“We’re a victim of our own success,” Kruzan said. “But it’s completely manageable, if we do it properly.”

The council did make changes to the original proposal. Now, for example, it will ensure the existence of more free spaces than were part of the first plan.

Kruzan told 24-Hour News 8 the installation is likely to begin in mid- to late-July.

He said that would ensure that the new system is ready when students return to Indiana University in the fall.
