Using arts for economic development

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - Leaders in an Indiana city are looking for ways to use the arts as a catalyst for economic development.
Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown plans to form a committee to consider creating an arts and entertainment district.
Brown tells The Columbus Republic that downtown Columbus already is known for its architecture, but needs to offer attractions for all demographic groups.
If leaders buy in to the idea, the city also might seek designation as an Indiana Cultural District.
Bloomington, Carmel and the Lafayette-West Lafayette areas were certified as cultural districts in 2010.
Karen Shrode of the Columbus Area Arts Council says the city needs to focus on enhancing the quality of life for its residents and that doing so will attract cultural tourism and new business.
