COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) — Planners are trying to come up with a new way to illuminate a distinctive steel arch bridge over Interstate 65 in central Indiana after a first try fell short of expectations.

Columbus city engineer Dave Hayward says a test of lighting scheme for the bridge at the highway's Indiana 46 interchange just didn't work.

Hayward tells The Republic that Tuesday night's test with various light colors found troubles illuminating the bridge's curved features, along with its dark red arch and dark gray cables.

Mayor Kristen Brown says she hopes to light up the bridge because it is the main gateway to the city, which has numerous architecturally renown buildings.

Hayward says another lighting test will probably be done within the next month.
