COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) - Columbus officials have adopted a new tornado siren policy intended to prevent confusion among the public.

The Columbus Board of Works approved the policy change Tuesday, 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Republic of Columbus reports . Now, tornado sirens will only sound during tornado warnings or when a funnel cloud or a tornado has been sighted.

Previously, sirens were also sounded when a severe thunderstorm warning was issued with a tornado watch in place.

The change comes on the heels of the same change in Marion County .
