COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) - A Columbus mother who reported a case of tainted Halloween candy has changed her story, 24-Hour News 8's news partner, The Republic , reports.

The woman originally said an orange Tootsie Roll with a one-inch-long metal staple was given to a 5-year-old boy. The Columbus child's mother claimed the tampered candy came from a home within the area surrounded by Second and Eighth streets, Washington Street and Lafayette Avenue. The staple had been straightened out and stuck through the candy wrapper, which led investigators to initially state it was deliberately placed in the Tootsie Roll.

On Friday, the newspaper reported the woman now says a friend simply found the wrapper on the floor and it had a staple in it.

Police are urging parents to continue to check their child's candy.
