INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A chemistry professor at Indiana University has received an award intended to recognize outstanding Hoosier scientists.

Dr. Richard DiMarchi received the Dr. Phillip E. Nelson Innovation Award from Gov. Mitch Daniels, who created the award in 2007 in part to encourage young people to pursue careers in science.

DiMarchi has spent most of his career as a scientist and executive at Lilly Research Laboratories. He helped develop the sepsis-treating drug Xigris. He has worked at IU since 2003, where his research has focused on obesity and diabetes.

The Nelson Innovation Award is named for Dr. Philip E. Nelson, a Purdue University scientist who received the 2007 World Food Prize for his achievements in the field of food processing.
