GREENWOOD, IN.(WISH) - Police were at a Greenwood apartment complex Sunday after finding a woman dead in her apartment the previous day.

It happened in the 1100 block of Stonehedge Drive on the north side of Greenwood late Saturday afternoon.

Greenwood Police said little over the weekend about the woman’s death, not commenting on how she died or if they believe foul play was involved.

Bryan Short lives next door to the woman’s upstairs apartment.

He said he left to get shakes for his children around 4 p.m., when, “I saw the maintenance man, he was out on his knees crying and everybody was rushing up to him, and the police were pulling in at that time.”

Some neighbors saw a car towed away. Others were informed by police what was happening.

“He said it’s a death, and he said it looks suspicious,” said neighbor George Strader.

“I asked the landlord if she thought it was an overdose or anything of that nature, but she said no, she thinks somebody had come in,” said Short.

Sunday, the woman’s apartment was covered with evidence tape. Detectives came back, carrying out bags of evidence.

They aren’t identifying the woman.

One maintenance worker came back to the apartments Sunday to remember a woman he calls Michelle.

“She’s an amazing person that touched everybody’s heart, she left an impression that would last a lifetime," said the maintenance worker, who would only be identified as Brian.

He said she lived in an upstairs apartment for about a year. Neighbors said her boyfriend may have lived there too.

George Strader said he saw her come home alone hours before police arrived.

“I seen her somewhere between 1:30 or 2 p.m. … she came in and she waved at me… it happened after that,” added Strader.

Now neighbors are left wondering – what happened?

"You don’t know if you have to be concerned for the community,” said Shane Turner.

“They were here last night, and I didn’t sleep a wink last night to be honest with you,” added Short.

Some are wondering why it happened.

“Everybody that knew her is grieving. She was an amazing woman,” said Brian, the maintenance worker.

Again, police aren’t saying if foul play was involved or saying if they do believe the death was suspicious.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
