Deputies arrest controversial Brooklyn town marshal

BROOKLYN, Ind. (WISH) - A man hired to lead the Brooklyn Police Department, and then fired three days later, was arrested Monday morning at his home. Former Brooklyn Town Marshal Terry Carlyle has been hired and fired three times as Brooklyn's top cop.

Now he's facing charges for his conduct during an arrest last August of John Trischler Sr.

Trischler likes to rock out to the radio while he piddles around on a fixer upper house that sits right across the street from the town's only bank.

"I bought this house for $8,000," Trischler proudly told 24-Hour News 8.

The unemployed carpenter spends most days working on the house, and that's what he was doing on Aug. 8 of last year when Terry Carlyle and another officer knocked on his door claiming someone had complained about his loud radio.

The probable cause affidavit states Trischler and Carlyle cussed each other out. The argument moved to the sidewalk, and that's when Carlyle arrested Trischler for public intoxication. Trischler says Carlyle held a grudge from another incident and hurt him during the arrest.

"There was tazing. [They said,] 'stop resisting' and I said, 'I'm not resisting.' Then they were pulling my arm up like that, and I'm pulling like that," said Trischler, demonstrating his arms being pulled backward at awkward angles.

Bradley Shaw, another Brooklyn officer who was present during the arrest, told state police investigators, "the arrest should never have happened." And what's more, Officer Shaw claims that Terry Carlyle wrote the arrest document and ordered Shaw to sign it, which is also a crime.

So Carlyle now finds himself under arrest and charged with forgery, intimidation, and official misconduct. But the arrest doesn't bring Trischler any sense of peace.

"I'm scared for my life for the guy. And I don't know why he has such a thing about me, but he seems to," said Carlyle.

There has been so much division in the town since the reinstatement of Carlyle as town marshal, one town council member asked for and was given police protection for three days.

Chris Hester is now the town marshal, and many in the town hope the arrest of Carlyle ends the fight over who should lead the Brooklyn Police Department.
