COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) - The Columbus Fire Department's first chance to use its new ice-rescue equipment, after more than a year of training with it, came Tuesday afternoon.
24-Hour news 8 news partner The Republic reports the life firefighters saved an 8-year-old golden retriever named Nala who had escaped from her owner, Mhairi Penrice, in the 500 block of Terrace Lake Road.
Nala and another dog had wandered out onto frozen Tipton Lake, off Baywood Court, shortly before 4:30 p.m., said Columbus Public Safety spokesperson Matt Myers.
When the dogs were about 35 feet from shore, the thin ice collapsed. While one of the canines managed to climb out and get to shore, the golden retriever found herself stuck in the water.
Rescue crews from nearby Station 5 arrived within minutes of getting the call from a nearby resident, and successfully completed Nala's rescue within 10 minutes.
