INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - We have tenaciously investigated the case of a Seymour man who pretended to be a psychologist and treated patients in at least three Indiana cities.
David Mowry admits he was living a lie. He bought a fake Ph.D. online and in January he got a temporary Indiana license to practice psychology. But Mowry apparently didn't wait for his own fraudulently-obtained license before getting a job.
According to leaders at HCR ManorCare, he began treating patients at the Avon facility last fall. The Indiana Attorney General says to get that job, he used the license number of a real psychologist.
Behavioral Care Solutions is located Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Through contracts, it provides services for facilities across Indiana, including HCR ManorCare in Avon.
Behavioral Care Solutions is the company that hired David Mowry. And 24-Hour News 8 had some questions.
When we arrived at Behavioral Care Solution's office, we asked for Dru Lazzara. According to the Indiana Psychology Licensing Board, Lazzara contacted them in March to verify Mowry's license number.
"You guys can't be in this office because we've got patients. So if you could go right outside," Lazarra said as she escorted us outside.
We waited for her to meet us outside the office. We asked about whether she conducted a background check on Mowry before hiring him. We also told her that we were aware that Mowry worked in Indiana at least six months.
Did it take that long for her to check his license?
She refused to answer both questions.
Next, we traveled David Mowry's house in Seymour, Indiana. His name was on the mailbox and there were three vehicles in the driveway. We could hear someone behind the door trying to quiet a dog. But he never opened the door. We spoke to a dozen neighbors, all of whom said Mowry keeps to himself.
"I only spoke to him a couple of times, and I didn't even know what his name was," said Christopher Warner, Mowry's next door neighbor.
There are still so many questions. Why did David Mowry pretend to be a psychologist? Did it really take Behavioral Care Solutions six months to check Mowry's license?
And the Indiana Psychology Licensing Board eventually gave Mowry a temporary license. What is the licensing board doing to protect Hoosiers in light of this case?
24-Hour News 8 will continue to investigate.
