MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Martinsville police are trying to understand what led to the shooting that killed a woman and left her 14-month-old child without a mother.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon inside the woman's Martinsville home while the child was inside the house. Police said Melissa Moore, 24, was shot twice. The child was not hurt.

Police arrested Moore’s boyfriend, Addam Foster, 32, who police said admitted shooting Moore.

24-Hour News 8 reporter Daniel Miller spent most of the day in Martinsville, learning more about the mother who lost her life.

"She was my kids’ godmother. That's how well I've known her," said Brittani Brewer.

Brewer held back tears as she talks about her best friend.

"We all called her Mo," Brewer said.

Monday afternoon police got a call to Moore's home on the south side of Martinsville. In a back bedroom, they found Moore's body Investigators said her boyfriend shot her to death.

"Mo was only 24. You know, she had so much life to live," Brewer said.

According to Martinsville Police Chief Darrell Davis, investigators didn't have to search for the suspect.

"Officers responded to the scene, did have a male subject come out of the residence with his hands up. He was told to leave the weapon in the residence, which he did," Davis said.

Brewer said the relationship between the two had been rocky.

"They always butted heads. I just think she finally, after five years, she just had enough, and she couldn't do it anymore. So she went out with to live with her mom, her and her daughter, until she could find a place of her own. that was she was trying to do," Brewer said.

Brewer said she's devastated, even more so for the child now left without a mother.

"You know, that little girl is going to grow up and not know ... . She's only going to be able to know her mother by pictures and what people can tell her," she said.

Child Protectives Services was called to the scene to take the girl. She's since been given over to the victim's family.

Police said this was the first time they've were called to the home for any type of disturbance.
