HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - It's been said, the worse the tragedy the stronger the bond. For Shaan Singh and Jim Bruce, the tragedy came March 2, 2012.

"I heard on the radio that it was obviously seven minutes away so I jumped in my car, drove up here, and got everybody in," said Bruce.

Bruce rushed to Singh's gas station and Subway restaurant.

"What made you come here?" Bruce responded,  "God knows."

"He said the siren gives you a warning. You must take it seriously," said Singh.

Bruce got a few employees to the back but the tornado was gaining power, quickly barreling toward the gas station.

"I locked the door and tried to push the door. When I locked the door, the tornado was there," said Singh.

The force threw Singh into a counter as the building crumbled around him.

"I had one young man with two pretty ghastly wounds, and like I said, in shock, and hypothermia, and not a place to lay him down," said Bruce.

A year later, everyone in Singh's store survived. He has recently rebuilt and has one daily customer who not only eats his sandwiches but gets lessons in the Indian language.

"I just knew them as Henryville Marathon but after that day we built bonds deeper than family.

A bond built from tragedy, a friendship not even a tornado could destroy.
